Break away from Mind, Once in awhile, and Walk close to Nature.
Rejoice and Feel Alive!
It was balmy, it was sweaty. The humidity and the mosquitoes had not allowed me to slip into deep sleep. In the middle of the afternoon I had woken up slowly walking out into the veranda of my cottage. The Arabian Westerlies gently blew across my hair, body and face giving me goose bumps as if Kala (Yama, the Hindu God of Death) himself had arrived. There was a little bit of wind followed by a deadly silence of the 3 PM humidity. I put on a breathing cotton shirt paired with slippers and began walking towards the beach.
I couldn't see the sun; it was enveloped in a cluster of dark clouds. The wind was thin and rare. There was silence initially but as I made my way through the tree plantations from the hutment zone, the humming of the fly bees took over. Idly walking through the silty pathway, it took me 20 minutes to reach the beach. I was not sleepwalking but just a little idle on the outside and a few murmurs from inside. And then I came upon the flushing Villupuram Sea roaring like a mammoth.
I stopped. I settled my slippers down into the sand, feeling myself sinking into the ground, and into the moment — to JUST BE. What happened next is that all of nature suddenly filled my senses as though it had not been there nor existed the moment before. I had been so preoccupied with the thoughts in my head, not only did I not notice its grandeur—I had not even noticed nature at all!
Hidden Miracles of the Natural World
It was like being filled with the music of higher beings. My ears opened and nature all around me began to speak — air blowing, coconut trees whistling with wind, slight drizzle melting from the clouds above and dripping into the receptive earth, and other mystical sounds from the interplay of the elements that I can’t quite describe.
Then my eyes rested. And in resting, my sight expanded to take in the whole incredible landscape surrounding me. It was alive, transforming, pulsing and luminous! Sea waves shimmering in the sunlight, blue sky into eternity, sculpted billowing clouds, refined architectural lines of the coconut trees… I felt like I was in one of my Yoga Nidra journeys!
The earth felt supportive, the rays of sunlight warmed me and I drank all the healing from the sun I needed, the air fresh and opening my lungs… and then it was the dogs that were yanking me to move on! So I moved on again, but soon stopped for myself to receive the beautiful aliveness all around me through my senses.
Rest Your Thoughts
To my amazement, I had been travelling at a very different pace than the natural world, which inherently has an integrated, holistic and intricate rhythm and flow. My own pace had been directed by my ‘mind’, which had been going so fast, with so many tasks and bits of information to remember, organize, and act on. And the self importance my thoughts had imposed on my body and whole being — as though the thoughts were in charge!
The mind is said to be a great follower but a terrible leader. How often do you put your mind in charge before your deeper knowing and wisdom? How often do you hear your mind speak before other people, other beings, and the natural world? Surprisingly, I had fallen into the ruling mind again! It’s often what a profession or modern life seems to demand of a person. But this was not work — this was walking to the beach in the middle of the day.
